One of the questions I often get asked is “What can counseling do for me that talking with a friend doesn't do?” I answer, “If a friend is willing to listen and you feel comfortable talking to them, go for it! But if you feel that there are some things you would rather keep in strict confidence, then the issue might be beyond their ability to help you.” Also, there is always the possibility that constant talks will start to strain the relationship. In these cases, you would do well to seek a professional counselor who will keep your conversations private and is always willing to listen. Working with a counselor is unlike any other relationship you've probably ever had. Unlike friendships, the focus is solely on you, and only you! It can be a little unnerving when you first start, but most people soon find themselves liking it.
As to what constitutes a good therapist for you depends on your personal needs as well as the counselor’s personality, orientation to therapy, and any other factors that are important to you.
